Our master bedroom went through a recent makeover and today I am spilling all of the details!
This room was actually the very first thing that I painted when we first moved into our house six years ago. I’ve always loved the grey and white and wasn’t planning on changing it. (You can see what the room used to look like by going here.)
However in creating that previous look (with the feature wall behind the bed made out of curtains) we had to block a window in the process. The windows in this room need to be replaced in the spring. As we were talking through that, we considered opening up the covered window (that was hidden behind the feature wall) as it would allow more light to enter the room.
And that it did.
We brainstormed a new layout that would allow the window to be visible and it left us with only one possible wall to position our bed on. (I’m all about symmetry when it comes to bed placement.)
We tried it and liked it!
However, the rest of our furniture just wasn’t fitting into the rest of the spaces available. We already needed to move around some dressers in other bedrooms (the reason for that coming soon!) so we decided to try some of the girls’ dressers in our room along with an IKEA shelf that I used to have in my office.
We found a layout that we liked!
At that point everything had to come down off of the walls with the new furniture placement so I decided to patch and paint. We didn’t go into this makeover with a fancy budget to update the space.
We simply wanted it to be clean, refreshing and inviting…in the least expensive way possible. #reallife
With all of the white in this room I knew that I could probably go darker on the walls. I decided to try Sparkling Emerald by Behr. As I began painting I was a bit nervous about my choice but in the end I LOVE how it turned out!
With the opportunity to start fresh on the walls I wanted to keep everything as simple as possible. Since mornings involve seven of us sharing one bathroom on the 2nd floor, I knew that having a mirror in our bedroom would help make getting ready go a bit smoother. I found this mirror at Target. (I’ll also put all of the sources at the bottom of the post.)
I’m still working on organizing the items stored in the bins below. One bin has scarves, another hats. I like the contrast in colors which is why the bins stayed on the shelf even though a few of them are currently empty. Part of our on-going lifestyle of living with less.
Essentials are still important. Here is my favorite Hunter fan that we have in each of our bedrooms. The Google Home is a new addition and I am LOVING it. I come in here often to listen to music while folding laundry or to intentionally rest a bit in the middle of the day while the kids are at school. It is so helpful to have a place that I can retreat to and enjoy!
On our bed I put two new pillows from Target to complete the look of the room and actually for practicality too. We don’t have a head board and I like to sit up in bed to read or watch TV. The cream textured faux fur euro pillow adds texture (it is SO soft) and works great to put behind my back so that I can sit up in bed.
Sam wanted something a bit smaller to put under his head when we watch TV. This black and white one worked out great for that. It is funny, years ago I used to be so against having a TV in our room but now it is such a game changer and something that we really enjoy. We’ll watch a show together after the kids go to bed to unwind and relax for the night. (We are currently watching, The Crown.) This way when guests are over and staying in our basement guest room, we don’t feel like we are disturbing them. The only TV in the house used to be the one in our family room right next to the guest room.
Little things like this can make all of the difference!
We still have two ottomans at the bottom of our bed where we store our extra sheets for the house. And we kept the two IKEA paper lamps that we got years ago.
The final change was a switch to our ceiling light. I’ve always enjoyed our previous one from IKEA that had a lot of character. But it was getting worn (since it was 6 years old and made out of paper) and Sam wanted something that he wouldn’t hit his head on now that the furniture placement was different. I found one at Home Depot and it actually doesn’t need any light bulbs because it has an integrated LED…technology for the win!
It is labeled as Antique Bronze but it looks pretty black to me, which worked really well with the new room design.
Most of the room changes involved shopping our house and moving furniture around. All in all it was a pretty simple room change to execute…paint on the wall, a new mirror, ceiling light & two new pillows. Yet with some simple changes, the end result is dramatically different than the original! I walk into the room and feel peace, calmness and delight! Check out all of the links to products below.
