Up until now I’ve never told you about how I found the courage to start An Inviting Home. It was just over two years ago that a friend shared a link on Facebook that was about organizing. At the time we were in the midst of making the final decision to adopt three kids. I was a stay at home mom to two little ones and I felt like I had no clue how to do this whole mom thing (the jury is still out on that one!) Our home at the time was 1400 square feet and I was trying to wrap my mind around how we were going to make this work. How can we move the refrigerator over a few inches so that all seven of us can fit around the kitchen table?
I was scared out of my mind but determined to find solutions.
It was that one click, on a post that a friend had shared, that led me to I Heart Organizing. I spent hours…HOURS diving into Jen’s project gallery. She had so many ideas on organizing and her home was so cheery…it instantly became one of my happy places. Not to mention that she was a mom to three boys so she was answering questions that I had on organizing with kids even before I knew I had them. I was able to adapt ideas for our space and my husband heard me say “Jen from I Heart” at least a million times.
I subscribed to Jen’s future posts and over the next several months I heard her share about how she began blogging. Years ago she came across, Young House Love, (another fabulous blog that I was introduced to through Jen’s blog…it is amazing!) and for the first time she realized that people not only blog about their lives and kids but also about their passions and hobbies.
I guess I hadn’t really noticed that either, since Jen’s blog was really the only thing I had ever read like it.
It got me thinking.
What am I passionate about?
It was obvious to me that one of my passions was organizing. Then I wondered, hmmm…I wonder if other people have questions about adoption just like I did? Maybe by talking about our journey it might encourage someone else in their journey. Part of my story included years of wondering if I would ever be a mom. Even if I didn’t have all of the answers about parenting and adoption it was something that truly brought great joy into my life. There was one more thing though that if I was stranded on an island I would certainly do. I would figure out a way to make a tree house and make it pretty! Wait…you mean I could blog about decorating too?!?
After trying to brainstorm a name that captured all of those things and searching for a domain name that wasn’t being sold for $10,000 dollars, I found www.aninvitinghome.com at the great low price of ten dollars. 🙂
An Inviting Home ~ Parenting.Adoption.Organization.Decor
Now 16 months from when I first hit publish I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Jen actually doesn’t live too far from me. We have never met in person and sometimes I wonder if I’ll bump into her while we are both cruising the same IKEA. 🙂 I submitted our recent bathroom remodel project to her for a possible reader space feature on her blog. She responded in an email saying that her jaw was on the floor when she saw our bathroom and she would love to feature the space and I wanted to respond saying that my jaw was on the floor when I got her email and would she like to meet up at IKEA for a cup of coffee? #imkidding #notreally #ishouldhavesaidthat
Well, today is the day that Jen is featuring our bathroom so I wanted to explain why that giant grin will be on my face ALL day long! 🙂
An Inviting Home has become such a special place in my heart and wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you here! Thank you for making it such a happy place and for letting me share about the things that I am most passionate about!
Now, if you have a few hours to spare I highly recommend reading this girl named Jen’s blog. 🙂
