It all started off like this…
I thought it was quite brilliant actually. A way to turn what had been a Christmas decoration with the phrase Joy & Peace To All and turn it into something that could be used year round.
During Christmas time it looked like this…
The stacked tea lights worked great for creating some post Christmas decor and I even imagined how brilliant they would look all lit in a row.
The not so genius part of me won the other night while friends were over hanging out. You should have seen the lights all sparkling in one grand crescendo. I almost took a picture for Instagram but contained myself since I’m trying to tuck my phone away during those times and be present more…trying is the key word. It wasn’t until the end of the night that Sam and I discovered something as we were turning the lights off to go to bed.
Yep, the heat from the top candle had caused all of the wax beneath to get hot leaving multiple towers trying to replicate the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We blew out the candles and left it until morning.
That next morning just happened to be the same morning that I heard that the Governor ordered all schools to be closed on Monday (which is today by the time I publish this post.) The high is suppose to be negative 11 degrees here in Minneapolis (the low is -24)…oye’ vey. My reaction when I heard the news…”I might not survive!”
It has been a long 2 weeks with all of the kids home from school and cold temperatures that would even make frosty the snowman want to come in from the cold. There have been tears about broken LEGOS, endless messes from projects that nobody wants to clean up before enthusiastically moving on to the next grand idea and this momma has literally reached her max on coloring, beading, play-doh and pretty much anything not involving books and declaring that everyone should find a cozy, quiet corner to read in until further notice.
Oh what a difference it is to be able to send kids outside to play for even a short amount of time.
My joy seemed to be melting on all fronts.
As another day inside commenced I grabbed the garbage can and a butter knife and began clean up on aisle seven.
Before I knew it the job was done and I could move on to the next challenge (which probably involved someone hitting or teasing someone…I’m sure you know exactly how that goes.)
I have quite the plethora of tea lights on hand so I decided to set up the candles the same way. However, never again shall those candles be lit while stacked on top of each other.
More than a story about tea lights and cold weather I am constantly reminded that my joy doesn’t come from situations or circumstances surrounding me. Those are always bound to fail me. My true joy and the reason that I can move on from one challenge to the next is because of the ONE who will never fail me.
I was reflecting on this verse in the New Living Translation. The “Sarah adaptation” is in parenthesis.
“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, (there is no green in sight) and there are no grapes on the vine; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; (which means the garden is covered in multiple inches of snow) even though the flocks die in the fields, (because they didn’t fly south quick enough 😉 Oh, wait flock of sheep. Either way they’d freeze right now) and the cattle barns are empty, (because they are freezing) yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. (My one true hope!) The sovereign LORD is my strength (when I am weak) He will make me as surefooted as a deer and bring me safely over the mountains (and through a long winter…AMEN!)” Habakkuk 3:17-19
In one of my posts later in the week I will give you some background on some of the decor that went up after the holiday decorations came down. But for now I’m counting my five little blessings, preparing myself for anything that they might bring me today, enjoying my time with them, and remembering where my true joy comes from.
How has your Christmas break at home gone? Has it been a peaceful and restful time? Do you have kids at home? Have you discovered any new tricks for staying joyful through it all? I would love to know!
Want to stay connected? Check out these great ways!
